Test Valley Packaging (TVP) and Wastepack have collaborated to provide support to businesses affected by new regulations associated with Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR).

Test Valley Packaging (TVP) and Wastepack have collaborated to provide support to businesses affected by new regulations associated with Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). The new legislation, which is part of the Environment Act 2021, is due to be phased in over the next few months and proceeding years. The two companies have launched an online hub, which can be accessed immediately, providing accurate and up-to-date information on the regulations.

EPR is a framework that builds on existing waste laws. It sets forth new obligations for the producers of goods, and the packaging supplied with those products. New waste management fees are to be introduced to cover Local Authority collection costs, in addition to financing recycling obligations under the Packaging Recycling Evidence system, also known as PRN.

Daniel Willock, Test Valley Packaging’s Marketing Manager explained: “Reporting standards are to be more detail orientated, including nationwide reporting for certain producer types. A new lower threshold of £1m annual turnover and 25 tonnes of packaging will be introduced for smaller businesses to report data. Under EPR, one organisation will be responsible for the full compliance cost and producers will no longer share responsibility within the packaging chain.”

The new legislation has the potential to increase costs for companies across the board and TVP and Wastepack aim to support businesses with end-to-end solutions that help them prepare for EPR, including an EPR business self-assessment guide, so you will be ready and in-the-know for the changeover.

Test Valley Packaging has a wealth of experience in the packaging industry and a team of experts on hand to provide forward thinking, innovative, sustainable solutions to any business. Test Valley Packaging offers a comprehensive range of packaging items, based on their vision to minimise the need for excessive packaging materials. The use of materials like Agri-waste paper and recycled paper can lead to reduced waste management fees.

Wastepack was one of the very first schemes to be registered in the UK in 1997 at the beginning of the Packaging Waste Regulations. The Wastepack Group now operates a number of producer compliance schemes representing over 1500 businesses, including many household names. With over two decades experience as producers’ expert compliance partner, the team has gathered extensive knowledge of Packaging compliance and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), alongside other related legislation such as the Plastic Packaging Tax and the Waste Electrical Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations.

Daniel Willock asserted: “We are excited to be partnering with Wastepack on this online hub, which should provide a real-world solution for customers and companies that are going to be affected by this legislation. We have launched a Beta version and will continue to update the data with the latest EPR news and work with businesses on compliance and reducing their waste management fees. We know this will affect the businesses we work with, and could prove costly; this partnership offers an effective solution. And you can try it out today!”
