Reforestation project on target

An ambitious plan to increase biodiversity through the planting of thousands of trees in inhospitable regions of southern Europe is already bearing fruit and on target to deliver on the environmental pledge.

Last spring, the Faber Halbertsma Group and Land Life Company agreed a multi-year reforestation programme with large-scale plantings in the Campos and Tarilente regions of Spain and, in a report at the beginning of 2021, announced that the initial 25,000 tree planting pledge had been met.

The report also states the planting, using the Land Life Company’s unique bio pods with built-in moisture to protect their fledgling status, forms part of the longer-term capture of 7,579 tonnes of CO2 emissions across 33 hectares over a 40 year period.

These savings, based upon the current plantings, reveal encouraging early results ahead of the business committing to more tree planting on multiple sites to sustain this carbon-reduction trajectory in the coming years.

The planting of billions of trees across the world is one of the biggest and cost-effective ways of removing CO2 out of the atmosphere to tackle the climate crisis, according to scientists who have calculated how many more forests could be planted without encroaching on crop land or urban areas.

According to the analysis from Swiss University EH Zurich, there are 1.7bn hectares of treeless land on the planet – equivalent to the size of the US and China combined – of which 1.2tn native saplings could naturally grow and create earth-cooling canopies as they absorb and store the carbon dioxide emissions that are driving global heating.

Studies estimate that a worldwide planting programme could remove two-thirds of all the emissions from human activities that remain in the atmosphere today.

The trees planted by Faber Halbertsma and Land Life Company – 18,300 of which were planted in Campos and 6,800 in Tarilente – include indigenous native species and fruit saplings to create as wide as possible bio-diversity programme in these largely arid regions.

It forms part of the Faber Halbertsma Group’s sustainable commitment where the reduction of CO2 emissions is a central objective.

Erik Faber, of the Faber Halbertsma Group, said: “As a packaging and pooling business and one of only nine per cent of global businesses that form part of the circular economy, this collaborative partnership project underlines our environmental commitments. This is because giving back is not a nice to have, but part of who we are – it forms part of our DNA.

“Last year we spelled out that sustainability was the spearhead of our strategy for the coming years – these results are just the start of something more ambitious.

“We recognised the collaboration with Land Life Company as pivotal to this. Reforestation in inhospitable parts of the world goes beyond what we do as a business in the circular economy – we are committed to the broader green agenda of reforestation as a way of helping to cool the planet.”

Land Life Company tracks all trees planted in the various locations so the growth and CO2 capture can be closely monitored.

At the time of the launch, Sander Keulen, head of business development at Land Life Company, said: “We are very happy the Faber Halbertsma Group is supporting us in reforesting land where nature cannot come back on its own. With this they do more than just compensating for their CO2 emissions. They are restoring nature and important ecosystems.”
